Centurions Handbook
Centurion Meeting held Saturday 27th January 2007

Present: Chris Flint, Peter Cassidy, Carl Lawton, Sue Clements
Apologies: Ann Sayer, Kathy Crilley, Brian Ficken, Colin Young

Purpose of meeting
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibilities for publications which would mark the Centenary and draft a plan in order to achieve this.

1 Existing Handbook
Those present agreed that the text and records of the existing Handbook would be updated, and ideally, when the Centenary edition was published it would contain 100 races. It was noted that earlier Centurion results record the total number of British Centurion events each individual has completed and the Centenary edition would follow this pattern.

Actions relating to the existing Handbook
i) The results and text covering the previous 10/11 years (i.e. including 2007) will be brought up to date. This will be complete and ready for issue by 30/11/07. Chris will go to see Bob Watts this coming week to ask Bob if he is willing to take this on. If Bob responds negatively Colin Young will be asked.
ii) Chris will contact Charlie and ask him what his Handbook update consists of. It may be that Charlie’s work already includes the number of British Centurion events each individual has completed so using this material would enable the update to be produced more quickly and easily.
Chris will also ask Charlie to send copies of his material to Chris, Carl and Sue.

2 Another publication
The meeting also identified the desirability of a ‘sister’ publication whose purpose was to convey the spirit of "Centurionism", encourage others to take part and so pave the way to the next 100 years of "Centurionism". It would consist of a variety of articles that capture the personality of the sport and other relevant topics e.g. history, facts (e.g. oldest, fastest, slowest), Centurions abroad, photographs, anecdotes, history of past key races (other long races?), course details (e.g. ascent), Cups and why they are awarded/who they have been awarded to, rules & conditions, the role of Clubs, 100 mile race archive.

The book would have an ISBN number.

Peter shared his knowledge and experience of editing the RWA Handbook and gave valuable information relating to the cost of publishing such a book.

Actions relating to the proposed book
i) We need a list of headings and all interested parties will be invited to suggest topics. Chris will put together an email circulation list for this purpose. The intention is to consult widely. All responses will be to Chris initially. Sue will collate them for discussion at a subsequent meeting (date/venue to be agreed).
ii) Chris will invite the Dutch, Australian, New Zealand and American Centurions to each contribute an article about Centurions in their countries. Sue will provide Chris with the New Zealand contact.

General

Editorial Committee
It was suggested that the following Centurions be invited to be part of the Editorial Committee: Charlie, Chris Flint, Sandra Brown, Richard Brown, Carl, Jill Green, Sue Clements. Sue will contact these people. Ultimately somebody with overall editorial control will be appointed.

Sue will write up the Minutes of this meeting for circulation to those present and will contact Kathy so they can be put onto the website.

The next Christmas newsletter will inform everybody about the proposals for Centenary publications. It will also (i) ask Centurions to indicate if they would be likely to buy the updated Handbook/ other publication to help plan and budget costs (ii) invite those interested in helping to step forward.

Next meeting: To be agreed
