At the Sri Chinmoy
24 hour race in Auckland over the weekend of 18/19 September, Peter
Baillie, in his first attempt at anything like this, walked 174.129km.
Peter’s performance can be gauged by the fact that the great Yiannis
Kouros, holder of the World Record for running 24 hours (303.506km),
managed to walk just 168.406km in his first up effort at walking the
distance.
Peter becomes "C13" being the 13th person to achieve Centurion status in
New Zealand
Other race walkers taking part in the 24 hour event included Keith Still
who called it a day at 102km. Bruce Webber started as a walker, but a foot
problem saw him elect to revert to running for the balance of his time on
the track. There were no female walkers in the 24 hour race this year
