Colchester 100 miles 2004
race report
|
|
A great success
with 13 new Centurions: 3 from the
UK and 10 from overseas.
Poor Eric Poulson from the US narrowly failed and was so disappointed, as
was Sue Clements who was just one lap from completing the whole 100 miles.
Sandra walked a solid race and was the easy winner.
Alf Short, a
Centurion last year, possibly went off too fast and paid the penalty. Ian Statter walked really well for 2nd, Chris Flint, the
organiser, came in 13th with Martin Fisher. Someone who did well
and received the new Ken Smith Memorial Trophy for the best performance
meriting the award was Sharon Gaytor.
Chris had been up since the crack of dawn to
supervise the tented city in a restricted area of the park, barely had
time to snatch a bite to eat before the start. Local MP Bob Russell
started the race and gave great support and interest throughout, and the
Mayor presented the Centurions trophies. Pam Ficken
presented the RWA awards.
A large Dutch contingent walked very strongly, and unfortunately Frans
Leijtens was DQ'd. The course was hard, and probably accounted for the
number of DNF's. Jaap Visser won the Eddie McNeir Trophy for the 3rd.
year in succession, the first time this has been achieved. Kevin Marshall
won the Hew Neilson trophy as the 1st new Centurion, coming in 4th.
overall.
All the Officials did stalwart work and I am extremely grateful to them
for giving up so much of their time. The official feeding station was
manned by Richard and Vicky Brown together with other volunteers and
Margaret and Lance Williams supplied meals and snacks for the Officials
throughout the 24 hours, and they all did a great job.

A word from the
helpers (aka Peter Cassidy)
Conversation about
5:00 p.m. on Saturday:
Little Girl with dog: Look, Mummy, those men are still walking.
Mother: Oh, yes, they were doing that when we went shopping, weren't
they?.
Cassidy: And they'll still be doing it when you're at home eating
the
shopping.
Mother: Really?
Cassidy: Yes, and they'll still be doing it tomorrow, when you come
back for the things you forgot to buy today.
Mother: Oh, the poor things! Why are they doing it?
Cassidy: They enjoy it.
[Mother hurries little girl away from the presence of what is obviously a
gang of dangerously demented loonies - the kind of people that Chris used
to run in for the good of the general public. Cassidy wanders off and
looks at venerable trees, in an attempt to appear unconnected with the
maniacs; dog bursts out laughing.]
Another word from
the organiser (aka Chris Flint)
Before the race fades
into the distant memory of those who took part either as participants,
judges, recorders/timekeepers, officials, marshals and stewards, and those
who manned the refreshment tables and supported the race, may I thank you
all for creating a great atmosphere and camaraderie which made it such an
enjoyable event despite the pain etc!
We were so lucky with the weather that I think we benefited from some
Divine assistance above.
It was great to see a strong overseas contingent (US, Holland, Denmark,
Belgium, Isle of Man and Germany) and thanks for supporting our event here
in the UK.
Alan, please pass my thanks to all the ladies in your IOM team, and my
congratulations to Ray and Simon and yourself and I'll send the national
trophy once it has been engraved.
Best wishes to you all, and lets meet again at next years 100miles/24
hours where ever that may be. |
