TRIBUTE LUNCH TO COLIN YOUNG
first published 16th April 2011
Centurion Vice President Colin Young's long athletics history was recounted at a tribute lunch on Friday April 15th, organised by Woodford Green AC Past President Tony Maxwell.
The venue was the Mudlark public house, near the Thames in the shadow of Southwark Cathedral. Walkers present included Alec Banyard, Bob Dobson, Chris Flint, Roger Mills, Paul Nihill and many more.
Great friends of walking, Mel Batty, Eamon Martin, John Bachelor and journalists Neil Allen and Tom Pollak were amongst the guests.... as was that great journalist and statistician Mel Watman of AW fame.

Ron Wallwork dug deep into his photographic collection and a framed photo of our 1961 UK Lugano Cup team was presented to Colin.

Professor Peter Radford, author of "The Celebrated Captain Barclay" was present and sitting with the walkers told us that he had unearthed more fascinating facts about the good Captain since the days that his book was published.

David Bedford gave a speech that had his audience "rolling in the aisles", and he introduced his new team member as Co-Race Director of the London Marathon from 2012 onwards...Hugh Brasher, son of late Olympic gold medalist Chris.

In total 15 Olympians were present. Other greats included Jim Alder, Julian Goater, Colin Moxsom and Bruce Tulloh. Truly a function to remember and all thanks to Tony for getting it organised.
