Dear Fellow Centurions,

The Centurions Committee meeting on 16th. March was a productive one during which Sandra, our new Captain, presented her vision of the future in a well prepared paper for us to discuss. If you would like to see it Sandra will be pleased to forward a copy.  In short, there is a belief that we should be promoting the Centurions as more of a group rather than as a collection of individuals and to give this some impetus we are putting on a 60 km walk along the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Walk on Sunday 15th. July starting at 9.30 am from Westminster (near the tube station).  This will be an opportunity for a social walk, rather on the lines of the Hadrian’s Wall walk last November.  We hope that there will be a good turnout, and more details will be circulated nearer the date about the actual meeting place and other information.  Please see the Centurions website for more details.

The Captains Newsletter is also on the website and Sandra will be compiling a monthly/bi-monthly letter in which she will raise certain issues for discussion, and we are hopeful that Centurions will respond so that we can get a dialogue going.  In the next edition Sandra will raise our hopes that Centurions will take up Sue Clements’ idea to compile a dossier of Centurions memories (a number have already been received and good reading they are too), and also discuss the question how best to archive Centurions material.  As may know we have established a close link with the Surrey History Centre at Woking where some of the original Minute Books and other documents have already been deposited.

The arrangements for the Colchester 100 miles on 22-23 September are progressing steadily, and local interest has been encouraging.  We hope that our friends from the Dutch clubs will again come to this famous town and take part, and we are encouraging walkers from other organisations to participate and become Centurions. The host club is Colchester Harriers AC, and the Centurions are organising the event with the club. Again, please see the website for details and an entry form.  We are looking for a really good turnout.

The number of email addresses is growing and I would like to see many more which facilitates the easy distribution of Centurions news, rather than by the expensive mail service.  If you know of Centurions whose addresses do not appear above please ask them to forward to me for inclusion on the database.  Under no circumstances would details of Centurions be communicated to an outside third party without permission.

We are very grateful to Kathy Crilley for managing the website which should be the automatic point of reference about Centurions activities, events, etc.

Before I close, just to let you know that Ed Shillabeer C.590 will be taking part in the Land’s End to Plymouth walk starting at 12 noon on Friday 25th. May on behalf of the charity Help for Heroes.  If you would like to make a pledge please do so to www.bmycharity.com/edmundshillabeer

Wishing you all the very best in long distancing racing/walking in this memorable Olympic Year.

Yours in Sport,

Chris
Hon. Secretary, The Centurions.
